date night 1

Whether on a first date or heading out with your sweetie for the hundredth time, figuring out what to wear can be the hardest part of the evening. In the past, seeking the perfect look may have involved changing into nearly every outfit in the closet, but I have picked out a few essential date night outfits that create a lasting favorable impression.

date night 4While the little black dress should be part of every woman’s wardrobe, it is not the choice for date night. Instead, opt for a visually interesting fitted dress with a great pattern or a metallic sheen. Length is important in a fitted dress; the most universally flattering style ends just above or at the knee. While going a bit shorter is fine if you love showing off your legs, the dress length should extend past the fingertips when standing with arms down at your sides.

date night 2Cold weather shouldn’t deter you from wearing a sleeveless dress. After all, most places have heat, or even better, a fireplace. Adding a fabulous coat and tights will shut out Old Man Winter’s bitterness. Choose natural-looking tights in a color that closely matches your own or opt for a more opaque look. Complete the outfit with a pair of high heel pumps. If your dress is non-metallic, you can add a pop of color or introduce some shine in your shoe choice, but for metallic dresses, keep your shoes more subtle (it is never a good thing to resemble a disco ball).

Sweater dresses, a wardrobe must-have in winter, are also great date looks. For casual or daytime dates, pair a chunky cable knit sweater dress with a great pair of flat boots and add a pair of leggings if you want added warmth. For evening dates, go a bit bolder and select a thinner, patterned knit. Swap the leggings for a pair of opaque tights and create some va-va-voom with a pair of high heel boots or booties. As with anything, fit is most important, and designers have finally realized that boxy knits do nothing good for women’s shapes. Lucky for us, many sweater dresses are fitted this season and thus are more flattering.

date night 3A dress is not a date night requirement, just an option, so if you are not a huge fan of dresses, fear not! I love the look of a pair of slim fit trousers or jeans and nice blouse for a night out. Slim fit trousers are dressier than are their wide leg counterpart and create a beautiful shape on any size. The trousers should hit right at the ankle or just above it, and look best with a closed toe pump. Whether it is a cobalt blue pump or patent leather platform, you cannot go wrong with a little color or shine on your shoes. date night 5

If jeans are more your thing, my only rule is that they be a uniform dark wash color. For date night, you want denim to be dressier, and a dark wash accomplishes this look. You can opt for a skinny jean or a wide leg jean. Skinny jeans look best paired with a pointed toe pump, ankle bootie, or high heel boot that hits your leg just below your knee. You can wear ankle boots or calf-high boots with wide leg jeans — just make sure your heels are high enough to prevent the cuff of the jeans from dragging on the floor.

When you look good, you feel good (this old-fashioned saying applies to both men and women). Date nights are the perfect excuse to get dressed up and feel fabulous; they are a great way to connect, or reconnect and rekindle romance in your life. I think date nights in the colder months are a little more romantic as we cuddle up against the chill and start heating things up.
